Sustainability
Environmental

We believe a sustainably built KB home is a better home. It’s better for our homebuyers – offering modern design, enhanced comfort, and the potential for lower utility costs, all tailored to reflect their unique preferences. It’s better for the environment – incorporating advanced sustainable materials, energy -and water-efficient systems, and construction practices that reduce resource use while prioritizing responsibly sourced materials. And it’s better for our business – delivering forward-thinking homes designed for the future while meeting the needs of today’s buyers.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is the cornerstone of our sustainability commitment

Since we first determined 19 years ago that energy efficiency would be the basis for our environmental sustainability efforts, we have led the way to implement these ideals – it’s the right choice for our customers, the environment, and our business. We strive to bring sustainability to production homebuilding, set the standard for innovation within our industry, and consistently demonstrate that an energy-efficient new home can also be a better home.

Built-in savings for our customers from day one

At KB Home, we treat energy-efficiency not as a compliance target but as a core design discipline – and a commitment we have carried for decades – that compounds value for the families in our homes. We build homes that use significantly less energy than a typical new home, targeting lower HERS scores through a tighter building envelope, high-performance windows, properly sized HVAC equipment, and efficient appliances. Our homes consistently outperform the national average for energy efficiency.

With a 2025 average HERS Index score of 43, one of the lowest among national homebuilders, KB Home customers can have meaningfully lower monthly energy bills and real long-term savings from day one.

Solar

Solar and clean energy

We built our first solar home in 2005 and introduced our first all-solar communities in 2011, taking an early leadership position in our industry on the importance of renewable energy. We have since expanded into solar-plus storage at select locations, adding resilience and more value for our homeowners.

Solar within reach

To make renewable solar energy more attainable, we offer homebuyers both leasing and financing options for solar power systems. We have also recently added higher efficiency panels that generate more power using the same roof space.

Water

Water, an emerging imperative

Water conservation has long been a critical issue for housing, and for nearly 20 years, we have been building water-efficient homes to address this concern. In many areas where we build, particularly our West Coast and Southwest regions, periodic drought conditions have become a way of life, making conservation essential.

Conserving a valued resource

A WaterSense labeled new home is designed to reduce water consumption without impacting quality or comfort. Many regions of the United Sates are experiencing more frequent and severe drought. Building highly water-efficient homes helps preserve this vital resource while lowering utility costs for our homeowners.

Healthier Homes

Healthier homes can support improved overall well-being

A high-performance home is not just efficient – it is healthy. KB Home designs every home to support a superior indoor environment: one that is properly ventilated, designed to reduce exposure to common indoor pollutants, thermally consistent, and comfortable year-round. These are not just background features; they meaningfully affect the daily lives and well-being of the families who live there.

Our approach to indoor health is aligned with the EPA Indoor airPLUS framework and addresses air quality, moisture control, pest-resistant construction, and thermal comfort. The features shown here work together, so regardless of what is happening outdoors, the environment inside a KB home stays clean, comfortable, and consistent.

2025 Sustainability Report

At KB Home, we believe that sustainability is built on one essential idea: balance. We strive to ensure that today’s buyers can achieve the dream of homeownership while balancing the objective with mindfulness about the sustainability needs of future generations and our environment. Sustaining the dream of homeownership both today and into the future is what we do every day.

This year, we published our 19th annual Sustainability Report, the longest-running publication of its kind in the homebuilding industry. We invite you to learn about what matters to us and join us on our journey. We encourage you to review our previous sustainability reports to learn more about our consistent, long-term approach and all the work that lies behind our 2025 sustainability results.
